How Pull Recipe works
Answers about links, files, the marks on an amount, your cookbook, and the free videos.
Which links work
Paste the link to one video:
- YouTube: a public watch page (
youtube.com/watch?v=…), a Short (youtube.com/shorts/…) or ayoutu.belink. YouTube videos are read from their link; we don’t copy or keep the video. - Instagram, TikTok and other video posts: Reels and video posts on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Threads, Reddit, Pinterest, X, Vimeo, and many other sites. We fetch the video for the import and delete it when the import ends.
A channel, a playlist, a profile, or a page with no video can’t be imported. If a post turns out to hold photos only, the import stops with “That link or file cannot be imported” and doesn’t use a free video.
You can also drag a link from another tab onto the page; it fills the field and waits for you to press Pull recipe.
Why a private or unlisted YouTube video fails
Only public YouTube videos can be read. A private or unlisted video ends with “Video is not public”. We never ask you to sign in to YouTube. If it’s your own video, make it public, or add the video file instead.
The 1-hour and 1 GB limits
A video can be up to 1 hour long. A file you add can be up to 1 GB. Your browser checks a file before it uploads, so a file over either limit stops at once.
Accepted files: MP4, MOV, MPEG, AVI, FLV, WebM, WMV and 3GP. Keep the tab open until the upload finishes; after that you can close it and the import keeps going.
What seen, heard and inferred mean
Every amount on a card says where it came from:
- Seen: the amount was shown on screen, in a caption or on a label.
- Heard: the cook said it.
- Inferred: the video didn’t show or say it, so the amount is an estimate. The line carries the word “inferred”; select it to see why.
If the screen and the voice disagree (the caption says 1 cup, the cook says three quarters), the line is marked inferred and shows both. The card keeps the on-screen figure and never averages them. After you change an amount, the line says “edited by you”.
Why servings or time can say “Not stated”
If the video never says how many it serves or how long it takes, the card says “Not stated” rather than guessing. You can fill it in with Edit.
How several dishes become a list
A video with one dish opens one recipe card. A video with several dishes lists every recipe it found: five dishes, a list of five. Save each one on its own, or Save all. It still counts as one video. If the video has no recipe, you get “No recipe in this video” and nothing is counted.
Editing a recipe and reporting a problem
Select Edit on any recipe to change the title, servings, time, an ingredient’s name, amount or unit, or a step. You can add and delete lines too. Edits are saved as you go, before or after you save the recipe to your cookbook.
If a card is wrong, use Report on the recipe: choose wrong amount, invented line, not a recipe, or other, and add a note. Reporting doesn’t change or delete the card.
The 3 free videos and Plus
Your first 3 videos that give you at least one recipe are free. A video with five recipes counts once. A failed import, a cancelled one, or a video with no recipe doesn’t count. Free videos are also limited per network, so clearing your browser doesn’t start a new set.
After that, Plus is $7.99 a week, $17.99 a month or $39.99 a year, with unlimited imports under fair use. You pay only when you choose a plan. Your saved recipes stay readable, editable and searchable whether or not you have Plus. See pricing.
Your cookbook without an account
You don’t need an account to start: your cookbook lives in this browser. Sign up with Google, Microsoft or an email code to keep it if you clear your browser, and to open it elsewhere. A cookbook that isn’t signed in and has no visit for 90 days is deleted. Buying Plus and connecting Notion need you to be signed in.
Sending a recipe to your notes
Send to copies a recipe, shares it, downloads it as Markdown, opens it in Obsidian or Bear, prints it, or sends it to a Notion workspace you connect. Every copy keeps the inferred marks as words, the source, and YouTube timestamps. You can export your whole cookbook from Settings.
